We believe that all cats deserve a chance to live happy, safe lives
Humans domesticated them and made them dependent on close association with us, so we should take responsibility
for them. Sadly, many people treat cats as if they have little value. They let them produce litter after litter
of kittens, when they become inconvenient they abandon them at nearby country farms, or take them to a humane
society where more than 71% of them are put to death. Recent estimates report 87 million community cats are
homeless in the U.S. CatTown believes there is a better way to prevent the overabundance of uncared for cats
by education and example.
At CatTown Rescue we provide cats shelter, provide vet care, find them adoptive and foster homes or lifetime
care and hospice care. We trap/neuter/release feral cats so they don't continue breeding. For pet owners who
are struggling (due to eviction/foreclosures, job loss, etc.), we offer temporary care for their cats until
they can be reunited with their humans.
It all costs a lot of money. Thanks to the help of the Stray Feral Rescue in St Paul MN (our fiscal agent),
we have been able to function as a non-profit, tax exempt organization and we now have a chance to keep this all
going - but we need help from anyone out there who is willing, both with donations and with volunteer time..
What do the donations go for? CatTown Operating costs
We presently go thru a minimum of 20 lbs of dry cat food each day, and we have about a dozen cats that need
to be on special diets for allergies, diabetes or other medical conditions. We go through cases canned food
as we have a number of cats who had to have few or no teeth, and for any sick or injured
cats who need something tempting to encourage them to eat. We also use a whole lot of litter!
Our veterinary bills are the largest bite out of the budget. In the last year we have spayed and neutered a
lot of cats. At present we have a cat being treated for congestive heart failure, two diabetic cats, one cat
needed to have an eye removed, one injured cat recovering from a leg and tail amputation, 5 cats that needed
to have all their teeth pulled due to severe stomatitis (and 3 more to go plus a few that just have one or two
bad teeth that could use dental attention), and another injured cat hit by a car that needed surgery to amputate her tail and remove her hip
bone who is now incontinent and needs to have her bladder squeezed out 4-5 times a day. There are a lot of the
disposable puppy pads involved in her care but she's a sweet little thing and we don't mind the extra work. We've had
a number of cats needing care
for infections and diseases such as chronic upper respiratory disease and herpes eye infections. Almost every new cat
that comes here needs to be tested for feline leukemia, FIV, needs vaccinations and checkups and then treatment if
necessary. It gets expensive.
CatTown Spay and Neuter Operation
Part of being all about cats is preventing more cats being born. This is of critical importance. If everyone spayed
their cat there wouldn't be millions killed every year and millions thrown away to fend for themselves. If there
weren't so many cats then it would be like the diamond industry. Anything hard to get is worth more than something
you can get for free any time you want it.
At present we are caring for three feral colonies in New Richmond, St Croix Falls, and one north of Amery, WI and a lot
of cats in foster care. All together we are caring for about 150 cats and
most of them are now spayed or neutered! There have been a couple recent additions to those colonies that we need
spay/neuter funds for as people continue to abandon their pets. We have been asked to help with another colony
in the area and would definitely like to expand our spay/neuter program to cover that as well. We have a lot to
do and a long way to go.
